PHOTO'S:  BERNARDINE ALTENROXEL
This cow fell into a water canal near Tzaneen in the Limpopo Province of South Africa.  With the help of the Tzaneen Fire Department, tow-in service, Sonco, and several helpers, the cow was finally saved from certain death.  Several attempts to remove her from the canal failed, mostly due to the steep sides of the canal.  Eventually, some three hours into the rescue effort, she was removed from the canal using a winch from the tow truck!  Once on dry ground, she lay perfectly still at first, exhausted from her ordeal.  It didn't take her long to scramble to her feet and run off into the bushveld however.  The owner of the cow says she is doing well and has recovered from her ordeal, despite being in calf!  The 'rescue' took place on April 22.
