On
September 11, 2001 I was on duty at the Hometown Fire Protection
District in Illinois. I drove our squad to another fire department
in the district that was having an academy to check on one of our guys
there. As I talked amongst friends, comrades and most of all
brothers we were informed that a plane had crashed into the trade
center. We all gathered by the tv to watch what was going on and
as we did the second plane struck. We all gasped in horror not
knowing what to think and only realizing that we had just lost our
fellow brothers. I immediately jumped back into my squad and went
back to my department where we were put on standby. I watched as
other firefighters reported to the station with the same saddened and
angry reaction i was trying to contain. Wanting to do all that we
could and feeling that nothing we would do could possibly be enough we
began a boot collection to raise money for our fellow brothers while one
of the teenagers in town took up a collection of items for the people of
New York. Not sure how to get it there me and another firefighter,
the teenager and his sister hopped in a van and were on our way to FDNY
Ladder 24 and Engine 1 in a matter of 2 to 3 weeks. In the time we
spent out there we experienced some things that we will never
forget and some things that will haunt us for the rest of our lives.
While out there I attended a funeral of a battalion chief and as his
little girl gave the eulogy with a country song playing in the
background "IF YOU GET THE CHANCE TO SIT IT OUT OR DANCE I HOPE YOU
DANCE" she ended her eulogy with "and dad if i get the chance
to sit it out or dance. I'll dance just for you dad."
No firefighter or civilian was strong enough to hold back the tears
following that brave little girls eulogy. There is'nt a single day
where that little girl has not crossed my thoughts. I find that
eulogy playing in my head numerous times a day. I experienced alot
while i was out in New York following the attacks that i will never
forget. When we got back we were on tv and in the newspapers, but
it was never about that it was about helping our fellow brothers.
While I am no longer with Hometown I have moved onto Ford Heights Fire
Department in Illinois it is an experience that will never be forgotten
just like those brave 343 firefighters that gave their lifes that day
doing the job that we all love doing. My blessings go out to their
families, friends and fellow brothers on FDNY. You will always be
in my heart.

Time has passed and yet the tears still flow
each time I see the pictures. My brothern, you will never be
forgotten, and may the rest of us be able to take the challenge to
make the sacrafice that each of you did on Sept. 11th. God's
speed and blessings to those left behind and those who answered the
call for the last time.

I feel woefully inadequate to express
my sincere gratitude to all firefighters and their families for all of
their sacrifices. Not only for the firefighters who have
given the most precious gift but also to those continuing in their
footsteps. We are so blessed and we continue to pray God's
blessings on you and your families. You will not be forgotten.

As I don't personally know any of the 911
firemen who lost their lives. They are all in my prayers. My husband
is a volunteer fireman (Captain 50 Station #5 New Point, Va in Mathews
County). While we are a small department and thank god have few calls,
they are all dangerous and I am thankful every time he walks back in
the door. My heart goes out to all the families who have lost love
ones in the line of duty. But I am also thankful that there are those
out there who are willing to risk their lives to save others. They
deserve all the THANKS in the world, and those who are on paid
departments certainly do not make enough to show the appreciation in
all our hearts.
Thank you Fireman!!
You are loved and Prayed for!!

To all of those brave men and women who have
answered the last bell, my god be with you and with the family you
