Time
does not quite heal all. Two years have passed. Seems like a
lifetime; seems like yesterday. I watched those towers go down
from the relative safety and security of my office in Highland, NY.
I was shocked to numbness, shaken to my very core. I wept, openly
and unashamed. I could not tear myself away from the horrific
images. The world was forever changed that day in September.
In the face of such tragedy, it would have been so very easy to simply
leave it at tears, and horror, and numbness, and to allow myself to heal
and to let the time pass and the memory fade. I resolved NOT to do
that. I went down to our local volunteer fire department and
volunteered to be a fire fighter. Each night now, before bed, I
read at least 5 of the names of those of New York's bravest who died on
9-11-01, and remember. At each call I go on, I remember.
When I meet a challenge that I'm quite convinced I'm not up to, I
remember. When my pager goes off at 3am, and I wish it hadn't, I
remember. When my brothers and I represent the first line of
assault and the last line of defense, I remember. When some poor
soul looks helplessly into my eyes because our knowledge and experience
will impact the outcome of the rest of their life, I remember. And
I pray fervently that if and when the time comes where I have to
"put it all on the line," that I live up to the legacy left to
us all by those who perished that day.
Let the pain heal, but don't let the memory die. Burn a candle,
say a prayer, plant a tree...sure, its all good. But think about a
lasting memorial. Volunteer. Help. Keep the memory
alive in the best way possible...by following the example of the brave
souls that day, and commit more than a passing thought or a shed tear to
their memory. Commit yourself.

I
would like to light a candle for all those who have died. Just think
about
all those who gave up their lives to trying to save other people's lives
who
they didn't even know. They were devoted to their jobs and familes. But
atleast now maybe they can do their same jobs up in heaven and wait for
their
families to join them.:)
